What can the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society (SGS) do to help you and your students? Resources · the SGS Library is full of genealogical resources; · the SGS website, www.saskgenealogy.com, has several research guides and articles to help a student become knowledgeable about the types of resources one can use to do their genealogy/family history research in Saskatchewan. · People – SGS has Certified Genealogical Instructors/members who are willing to visit your classroom. · Educational Programs – SGS offers classes taught by Certified Genealogical Instructors for the purpose of teaching students how to begin doing their genealogy/family history. It is located at 110 - 1514 11th Avenue in Regina, Saskatchewan. The Library was established to serve the needs and interests of its members. Reference privileges are available to the general public; but only members of the society may use the microfilm/microfiche collection. Those members are able to borrow books by mail. The mail service is available only to those members who live in Canada. The SGS Library collection consists of records and guides including microfilms, microfiche, periodicals and maps of Saskatchewan, and the rest of Canada, the United States, Great Britain, and Europe. One of the useful tools in the library is the Saskatchewan Residents index (SRI) - a database of 2.8 million Saskatchewan residents extracted from local histories, cemetery records, and other sources. Bulletin: The Saskatchewan Genealogical Society Bulletin is a quarterly journal designed to inform the membership about genealogical resources in Saskatchewan and throughout the world. Cemetery Program: The Cemetery Program was undertaken to locate and record burial sites in Saskatchewan. To date SGS has located more than 3,423 cemeteries and/or burial sites in 299 Rural Municipalities in the province. SGS has cemetery records for more than 2,410 of these sites. This is an ongoing program. The Saskatchewan Cemetery List is the SGS web site at www.saskgenealogy.com is an inventory of the cemeteries recorded to date. Saskatchewan Residents Index (SRI): the SRI is a database. It is an ongoing program to index the names found in the cemetery collection, local history books, Cummins Maps, Voters’ Lists, and other books that list Saskatchewan residents. Currently there are over 2.8 million names on the database. Over half of the SGS Cemetery Files have been entered into the database. The printout from the SRI was designed to provide the following information. - surname (if known). A woman’s maiden name, rather than married name, is used if it is part of the source; - given name or initials; - relationship – spouse or parents, if given; - year of birth, death, or marriage; - settlement year and location; - year and place of residence; - family information; - recorded location – location where the event took place; - place and country of birth, if given; - the title of the original source (book, map, document, etc.); - the name of the principal community for the original source; - page number in the source; and - where the source is located (i.e. Saskatchewan Genealogical Society Library, Regina Public Library, Frances Morrison Library in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Archives Board, Legislative Library, etc.) Saskatchewan Homestead Indexing Project (SHIP): the entire homestead index of some 330,000 card entries has been entered into a fully searchable database. The database can be found at http://www.saskhomesteads.com/. The index is also available on CD-ROM. With information from the online digital index researchers can contact the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society or the Saskatchewan Archives Board to obtain copies of the contents of the homestead file. Obituary Files: The SGS Obituary File contains about 750,000 obituaries from Saskatchewan newspapers. The majority of the obituaries date from 1983, but there are obituaries dating back to the 1880s. This is an ongoing program that is added to weekly. Saskatchewan Heritage Resources Directory (SHRD): is a project designed to locate and identify heritage resources in Saskatchewan. This program will be placed on the Internet in the next few months. See Saskatchewan Heritage Resources Directory (SHRD) on the SGS web site www.saskgenealogy.com for more information. Education: workshops are provided through SGS Library, the SGS branches around the province, community colleges, the Internet, and at special events such as the annual meeting, the annual seminar, and the Heritage Day Open House. The SGS also offers certification courses to members who wish to become Certified Saskatchewan Researchers or Instructors. |
